A Day of Service

Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Each year, millions of Americans serve their communities to honor his legacy in a day of service.
If your volunteer plans have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, here are a few options to make a difference while still keeping yourself safe:
  • Volunteer with or donate to Funky Town Fridge.  A community fridge project that aims to combat hunger, empower our communities, reduce food waste, and educate the city of Fort Worth, Funky Town Fridge places refrigerators and pantries in public spaces accessible to the community 24 hours a day and stock them with nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste. Learn more here.
  • Give blood with Carter BloodCare. Due to the pandemic, blood supply is at a critical shortage due to less donors than usual. All blood types are needed from all eligible blood donors. As a benefit, the blood center is showing appreciation to those who donate blood by providing no-cost COVID-19 antibody testing on successful donations. And, if you’ve recovered from COVID-19, you could help others recover with a convalescent plasma donation. Learn more here.
  • Help fill the pantry at Ronald McDonald House Fort Worth. Ronald McDonald House believes no family should have to deal with their child’s medical crisis alone and they offer a supportive, home-like community that eases burdens for seriously ill children and their families. Help fill their pantry with items needed to make their house a home for these families. Learn more here.
  • Donate to Goodwill North Central Texas. With no contact donation opportunities and more than 35 area donation locations you can rid your home of clutter or clothing you’re no longer using and help make the difference in someone’s life at the same time. Goodwill turns your unwanted donations into free job training and placement programs for people with disabilities, at-risk youth, the formerly incarcerated, the homeless and our veterans and help them transition from a life of dependence to one of independence. Whatever you do on Monday, “Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off.”
