Porter Johnson’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the support of organizations like Goodwill North Central Texas. Over 20 years ago, Porter began his career as a dock worker for a beverage company. He had a dream of becoming a truck driver, but the path seemed out of reach due to the cost of obtaining a Class A CDL license.
Undeterred, Porter took a different route and obtained a Class B CDL license, which allowed him to drive buses – school, city and charter – for many years. However, his dream of becoming a professional truck driver never wavered.
In August 2023, facing unemployment and in need of assistance, Porter turned to Goodwill for help. Through the North Texas Institute for Career Development (NTI), he discovered the opportunity for a free course in professional truck driving to obtain his Class A CDL license thanks to funding from the City of Arlington’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.
Porter wasted no time and enrolled in the program, demonstrating his commitment by arriving early, working through lunches, and seizing every opportunity to practice driving. Just over two months later, in October, Porter felt prepared to take the test and passed with flying colors, earning his Class A CDL license.
With his credentials in hand, Porter quickly secured employment with an Arizona-based trucking company he connected with at an NTI job fair. His journey didn’t stop there. In December 2023, he received another job offer from Thomas and Thomas Logistics LLC, a DFW-based freight company, which he happily accepted.
Today, Porter is living his dream, hauling freight all around DFW, thanks to the support and resources provided by Goodwill North Central Texas. Reflecting on his journey, Porter expresses gratitude for the tools and opportunities Goodwill provided, made possible by the support of the City of Arlington.
