A Legacy of Empowerment
Goodwill was founded over 120 years ago by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a visionary who believed in “not charity, but a chance.” Helms collected used goods, trained and hired people in need to repair them, and sold or gave the items back to the community. This philosophy of empowerment through work is still at the heart of Goodwill today.
Goodwill Industries International (GII), based in Rockville, MD, oversees a network of more than 150 community-based Goodwill organizations across the United States and Canada, and in countries like Korea, Brazil, Finland and Italy. Each organization operates its own programs, aligned with the local job market and community needs.
