James Rogers, a proud veteran and Texas native, has faced numerous challenges in his life. Born and raised in Irving, Texas, James graduated from Nimitz High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1985. During his honorable service, he earned certification as a Refrigeration and Cryogenics Specialist and was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal.
After serving his country, James worked in various roles, including as a Maintenance Technician for the Texas Department of Transportation and a Plating Operator for ESNA Texas. Despite his skills and dedication, he encountered setbacks, including mental health struggles, layoffs, and other barriers to stable employment. By early 2024, James was at risk of homelessness and struggling to secure work due to his criminal history and physical disability.
Determined to turn his life around, James turned to Goodwill North Central Texas in February 2024. He enrolled in the VetWorthy program, a specialized initiative that provides career services, job placement, and support tailored to veterans. Through the program, James received one-on-one guidance from an Employment Specialist, attended a Goodwill hiring event, and secured an on-the-spot offer as a Retail Donation Attendant at the Hurst, Texas Goodwill store.
In just six months, James not only excelled in his role but also earned “Employee of the Month” within his first three months. His hard-working mentality and positive attitude helped him thrive, and he even obtained his forklift certification while on the job.
James credits Goodwill with giving him the second chance he needed, stating, “Goodwill gave me a chance when I was down and out. Employers kept turning me down due to my criminal history and personal barriers.” He also shared that his coworkers and management team have become like family, a sentiment especially meaningful since he no longer has immediate family members.
Goodwill North Central Texas provides a range of programs, like VetWorthy, job training, and educational support, designed to help individuals overcome barriers to employment and find meaningful careers. James’ story is a powerful example of how these programs can provide not just jobs, but also hope and a sense of belonging.
