At Goodwill, we’re committed to empowering individuals from all walks of life, including those with disabilities, at-risk youth, veterans, people experiencing homelessness and individuals with criminal records. One example is Justo Chediaz, a determined man who overcame numerous obstacles to rebuild his life and career.
Originally from Cuba, Justo faced significant challenges after his release from incarceration. Determined to create a better future, he earned his GED and took on demanding warehouse jobs. Despite his hard work, he dreamed of achieving more. Justo saved diligently to attend English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, which opened doors to further opportunities, including forklift certification and career advancement.
After retiring from a 16-year career, Justo soon realized he needed additional income to make ends meet. However, re-entering the workforce presented new hurdles. His age, accent, and lack of digital skills made job hunting especially difficult. Feeling discouraged, Justo turned to the Texas Workforce Commission, which referred him to Goodwill’s Job Resource Center (JRC) in Denton.
Justo admitted he wasn’t comfortable using computers and had struggled for months to find work. With bills piling up, the pressure was mounting. The Goodwill team reassured him that he wasn’t alone and offered the tools and support he needed to succeed. Enrolling in the Opportunity Accelerator and Digital Accelerator programs, Justo partnered with a Job Placement Specialist to build his resume and apply for jobs.
Determined to succeed, Justo visited the JRC daily and set recurring appointments with his Job Placement Specialist. He applied to felon-friendly job leads and prepared extensively for interviews. After his first interview didn’t go as planned, Justo admitted, “I can’t do it. I get choked up; my words are no good.” His Job Placement Specialist encouraged him to participate in mock interviews, where they practiced responses and reviewed interview tips until he felt confident.
With perseverance and support, Justo sharpened his communication skills and gained confidence using computers. He soon secured three job interviews and, by September 2024, landed a position as a Custodian at the University of North Texas. Justo now enjoys a lighter workload, generous pay, and benefits, and he feels proud of his accomplishments.
Reflecting on his journey, Justo says, “My life is better now. I have money for rent and my truck. Goodwill has helped me with a lot. Collaborating with you gave me hope that I CAN get a job. Thank you for being there for me.”
