Every year, approximately 650,000 people are released from federal and state prisons, often with limited resources to rebuild their lives. With over 70 million Americans having some form of criminal record, the challenge of finding stable employment, housing and support services remains a significant barrier to long-term success.
At Goodwill North Central Texas, we believe in the power of second chances and the ability of meaningful employment to transform lives. Our Relaunch Program is specifically designed to support individuals who have been involved in the justice system by providing them with the tools, training and resources they need to achieve self-sufficiency and stability.
Why Second Chances Matter
Studies show that stable employment directly correlates with decreased recidivism—the likelihood of someone returning to prison after release. When individuals have access to quality jobs, they are less likely to reoffend and more likely to become productive members of their communities. Unfortunately, many justice-impacted individuals face barriers to employment, including stigma, lack of experience and gaps in their work history.
How Goodwill Supports Second Chances
Through the Relaunch Program, Goodwill North Central Texas provides holistic, wrap-around services that address the unique needs of justice-impacted individuals, including:
✔ Employment Readiness Training – Resume building, interview coaching and soft skills development.
✔ Occupational Skill Training – Industry-specific certifications and hands-on training for in-demand careers.
✔ Job Placement Assistance – Partnerships with employers who believe in second chances.
✔ GED Preparation & Education – Basic skills training, ESL courses, and educational support.
✔ Life Skills & Supportive Services – Housing assistance, mental health support and substance use resources.
We also work with local expungement services organizations, which help individuals erase or seal criminal records. This process can remove barriers to employment, housing, and financial stability, providing a true second chance at success.
Advocating for Fair Opportunities
Goodwill is not only committed to on-the-ground support, but we also advocate for policy solutions that expand access to employment for justice-impacted individuals. Goodwill has played a key role in shaping initiatives like the First Step Act and the Second Chance Act, as well as strengthening the U.S. Department of Labor’s Reentry Employment Opportunities program.
