Leroy Johnson proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1977 to 1980, where he developed the discipline, respect and resilience that continue to guide him today.
Like many veterans, Leroy faced challenges transitioning back to civilian life. Adjusting to a new routine, overcoming employment gaps, and navigating age-related barriers made finding work difficult. For about a year, he relied on VA benefits while searching for an opportunity to move forward.
His path changed during a visit to a Goodwill North Central Texas store, where he learned about VetWorthy, Goodwill’s program designed to support veterans with career services, job readiness training and employment connections.
Through VetWorthy, Leroy received resume support, attended job fairs, and strengthened his interview skills. Just as important, he found a team that treated him with respect and was committed to helping him succeed.
Within one month of enrolling and attending two job fairs, Leroy secured part-time employment. While a modest start, it provided steady income and an important step toward stability.
Beyond employment, Leroy experienced a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. The support he received reminded him that his service still matters and that new opportunities are always possible.
“Try not to carry your feelings on your shoulders because a closed mouth doesn’t get fed,” Leroy shared. “Pray and ask God for work, and he will make a way. Success is how you view it, with help from others.”
Today, Leroy is moving forward with greater confidence and less uncertainty. His journey is a reminder that with the right support and determination, veterans can successfully transition into the next chapter of their lives.
