In June 2024, Barbara Smith embarked on a transformative journey with Goodwill’s Digital Career Accelerator (DCA) program. At 76 years old, Barbara has shown that learning never stops, attending computer training classes to expand her digital literacy and embrace today’s technology-driven world.
Barbara has made remarkable progress, completing courses such as Basic Computer Skills & Windows 11, Google Suites (Drive, Slides, and Sheets), Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word Intermediate. Her determination to learn stems from a desire to stay mentally active and engaged while equipping herself with valuable, modern skills.
Barbara first heard about Goodwill’s computer training classes years ago but didn’t decide to join until a friend shared her own positive experience. Barbara reflects, “I didn’t want to take classes at the colleges because of my age; I’m 76, and trying to get around those huge campuses, I wasn’t going to do it. Coming to classes here is such a convenience.”
Despite initial struggles with technology, Barbara has remained committed to her learning journey. “I struggle with retaining all that information; it’s a lot. I could blame it on brain fog, but I am able to grasp enough to be confident enough to use the information taught to me,” she shares. Each class has provided her with invaluable knowledge and boosted her confidence.
One of Barbara’s proudest moments came when she created and presented a slideshow about her upbringing, challenges, and love for life and family. This project not only highlighted her newfound technical skills but also demonstrated her personal growth and confidence.
Barbara describes her experience as “enriching and enjoyable,” crediting her instructor’s efforts for helping her succeed. She plans to continue building her digital skills through Goodwill’s DCA program, embracing each opportunity to learn and grow.
