Though he was young and a bit hot-headed, Courieen Newton knew he wanted to change his life. After a family member encouraged him to seek employment and obtain his CDL license, he went to Texas Workforce Commission for assistance. He was approved for funding to attend the North Texas Institute for Career Development’s (NTI) Professional Truck Driver training program, and in April 2022 he applied and attended orientation. However, due to a funding delay, his start date was pushed back. Already on probation, he was frustrated that his plans to earn his CDL license were put on hold.
He waited for his chance to enroll in the NTI training program for several months, and when he joined the program in August, NTI staff strengthened their relationship with him and worked with him to channel his frustrations through a positive outlet. With this assistance, Courieen excelled in his training and quickly became a leader in the classroom.
He passed his truck driver training test on his first attempt, and within a month found employment with Trans Am Trucking. His time at NTI gave him the skills he needed to explore his career options and find a path that suits him. He has now been employed for five months and has found the change he was seeking.
