From Soldier to Support Specialist: How Dawnecia Found Her Purpose with Goodwill

For Dawnecia Green-Williams, service has always been second nature.

Born in Louisiana and raised in Mississippi, Dawnecia joined the U.S. Army in 1997. Over the next eight years, she rose to the rank of Sergeant and was awarded both the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal for her dedication and performance. As a Petroleum Supply Specialist, she played a vital role behind the scenes making sure troops had the fuel and resources needed to complete their missions.

Her journey took her across the globe, from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to Germany, Virginia, and ultimately to Fort Cavazos in Texas. After her military service, Dawnecia continued to support military operations overseas, working as a contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan, where she met her husband. Together, they’ve built a life with their four children and recently settled in Tarrant County to pursue new opportunities in the DFW metroplex.

Though she had found steady work at Sam’s Club Distribution Center, Dawnecia craved more – more purpose, more growth and more stability. That’s when she made the brave decision to leave her position and begin studying Human Resources and Business Management.

In October 2024, Dawnecia came to the Goodwill North Central Texas Career Center, where she learned about our VetWorthy program, a veteran-focused initiative that provides job training, career counseling and placement support. With resume help, interview prep and guidance from the VetWorthy team, Dawnecia not only reentered the workforce, she joined it full circle.

Today, she proudly serves as an Employment Specialist on the very same VetWorthy team that once supported her. In May 2025, Dawnecia celebrated six months of success in her new role and now takes pride in mentoring other veterans as they begin their own journey toward purpose.

“Goodwill gave me the opportunity to grow and give back,” she says. “Now I get to do the same for others.”
