Jacob Shelton understands the importance of self improvement. Diagnosed on the autism spectrum as a child, he worked with specialists to develop coping skills for school. After graduating from high school, he struggled to find a sense of purpose. Both he and his parents knew he needed a new space to grow. Goodwill’s S.T.A.R.S. program offered a solution.
S.T.A.R.S., which stands for Skills Training Achieves Results, is a life skills program for adults with disabilities. Participants learn daily living skills as well as pre-vocational skills so that they can achieve their maximum independence.
S.T.A.R.S. gave Jacob a structured, community-based learning environment where he could bond with other participants and gain confidence in his abilities. Jacob is a leader in the classroom and takes pride in helping others. His connection to participants and staff is exemplary, and in 2024 he was named the Shining Star of the Year.
