For Arlington native Brian Goodspeed, hard work has always been part of his story. Straight out of high school, he earned his Texas Real Estate License, a major accomplishment for someone his age. Still, he wanted more. He wanted a career with room to grow, opportunities to explore the country, and a steady income. With trucking in his family, he knew exactly where to look next.
Brian connected with Goodwill North Central Texas’ North Texas Institute (NTI) in April 2025 to learn more about earning his Commercial Driver’s License. He faced immediate barriers, including course fees and being just shy of the required age of 21. Instead of giving up, he stayed focused. He attended orientation in April and, on the very day he turned 21 in May, he enrolled in CDL training. His tuition was covered through support from the Community Development Block Grant, giving him the chance to fully commit to the 7-week program.
Leaving his job at a moving company to focus on training was a leap of faith, but Brian approached each day with determination. He studied hard, practiced consistently, and even stepped in to help classmates who needed extra support. His instructors saw not only his dedication, but also his natural leadership.
When it came time to take his CDL test, the road proved challenging. Brian did not pass on his first or second attempt. Still, he refused to let setbacks stop him. On his third try, he passed and earned his Class A license. His persistence paid off.
With his new credential in hand, Brian began working with Goodwill’s placement team to find the right employer. Their outreach led to a connection with a local company eager to bring him on board. Brian interviewed, impressed the team, and was offered a position. He completed his first shift on August 20 and is already thriving in his new career.
Brian’s story is a powerful reminder that success is not about avoiding challenges. It is about pushing through them.
“I’ve taken losses, had doubts, and wanted to quit more times than I can count,” Brian shared. “But I’m living proof that if you keep going, even when it is hard, success shows up.”
Today, Brian is building the future he once dreamed about and proving that determination can take you anywhere.
