March 21 marks World Down Syndrome Day, a global day dedicated to raising awareness, advocating for inclusion, and celebrating the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome. At Goodwill North Central Texas, we are proud to support individuals with disabilities through our S.T.A.R.S. (Skills Training Achieves Results with Support) Program, which empowers participants to gain independence, build life skills, and engage with their communities.
Creating a Supportive Learning Environment
The S.T.A.R.S. Program provides a unique day program designed to help individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities develop the skills they need to thrive. Participants rotate through interactive spaces such as an apartment, general store, town square, art studio, and fitness center—each designed to simulate real-life scenarios and encourage hands-on learning.
Real-World Skill Building
From managing a budget at the general store to practicing daily living skills in the apartment setting, S.T.A.R.S. participants gain valuable experience that fosters confidence and independence. Additionally, our program includes group outings where participants apply their skills in real-world settings, promoting social interaction and engagement within the community.
Pre-Vocational Training Opportunities
For those interested in workplace readiness, S.T.A.R.S. partners with Goodwill retail stores to provide hands-on job experience. Participants gain soft-skills training and work experience in a retail environment, helping them prepare for potential future employment.
Celebrating Inclusion on World Down Syndrome Day
World Down Syndrome Day is a reminder that every individual deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their personal goals. At Goodwill North Central Texas, we are committed to fostering inclusivity and providing the tools and resources needed for success.
By supporting Goodwill, whether through donations, shopping, or volunteering, you are helping us continue programs like S.T.A.R.S. that empower individuals of all abilities. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
