Virgil McKinney had been a professional truck driver for 20 years, but in 2016 that all changed. Having lost his license due to lack of insurance and an accusation of driving while intoxicated, he knew he needed a fresh start.
Virgil came to Texas and began his renewal efforts with Texas Workforce Solutions, where they referred him their Vocational Rehabilitation Services department in 2022. From there he was connected to Goodwill North Central Texas’ career and technical school, the North Texas Institute for Career Development (NTI). Virgil enrolled in the school’s CDL professional truck driver training program to begin his recertification process.
Virgil’s experience brought him success in the program, and he was quickly recognized as a leader in the classroom. He earned his professional truck driver’s license in January 2023 and began searching for employment. Virgil understood that his driving record and employment gap would be a barrier, but with help from NTI staff he found a company that gave him a second chance, Trans Am Trucking. With his persistence and vocational rehabilitation, Virgil is setting a new course for his future.
