At 33 years old, Denton resident Amber Bates had already faced more barriers to employment than most. Living with a learning and neurological disability and being legally blind in one eye, Amber often found that employers focused on her limitations rather than her abilities. Still, she remained determined to find meaningful work and a place where she could succeed.
That determination led Amber to the Goodwill Job Resource Center, where she enrolled in the Goodwill Works Program. From the very beginning, Amber stood out for her motivation and commitment. With the support of Goodwill staff, she created her first professional résumé and was paired with a Job Placement Specialist who helped guide her every step of the way.
Amber quickly became a familiar face at the center. She attended nearly every workshop offered, eagerly building her skills and confidence. From interview preparation and dressing for success to interactive activities like Job Ready Jeopardy and Job Skills Bingo, Amber embraced every opportunity to learn. Even after more than 25 interviews that did not result in a job offer, she never lost hope.
With continued encouragement and support, Amber applied for a position at the Goodwill Denton Retail Store. In preparation, she completed more than ten mock interviews with her Job Placement Specialist, sharpening her answers and strengthening her confidence.
When interview day arrived, Amber put everything she had learned into practice. Her hard work paid off and she was offered the position on the spot.
Since joining the Goodwill Denton team, Amber has not missed a single shift. She takes pride in her work, enjoys being part of the Goodwill family and continues to inspire those around her with her dedication and perseverance.
Amber’s journey is a powerful reminder that with determination, support and opportunity, barriers can be overcome and potential can shine.
