October is a special month dedicated to recognizing the incredible contributions made by workers with disabilities. National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) unites employers, government agencies, and nonprofits across the nation, including Goodwill North Central Texas, to celebrate the talents and resilience of individuals with disabilities in the workforce.
This year’s NDEAM theme, “Advancing Access and Equity,” emphasizes the importance of creating equal opportunities for all individuals to showcase their skills and talents. In an ever-recovering economy, inclusivity remains a critical factor in our journey toward prosperity. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, while significant job gains have been made, only 24.9% of Americans with disabilities participate in the labor force, compared to 68.4% of the general population. Moreover, the jobless rate among workers with disabilities remains nearly double that of those without disabilities, at 7.4% versus 3.8%, as reported in August 2023.
Goodwill, a network of 154 independent, community-based organizations in the U.S. and Canada, plays a pivotal role in empowering individuals with disabilities to find meaningful employment. Last year alone, Goodwill organizations across North America provided services to more than 155,000 people with disabilities. Goodwill North Central Texas, with its 28+ unique employment training and placement programs, served 7,761 individuals, making a significant impact on their lives.
One of the key elements of Goodwill’s mission is to provide comprehensive support services to individuals with disabilities. These services include occupational skills training, job readiness and soft skills training. It’s about more than just finding a job; it’s about equipping individuals with the tools they need to thrive in their careers.
It’s important to note that individuals with disabilities are not just workers; they are dependable and valuable members of the workforce. They tend to have higher employee retention rates, leading to lower hiring and training costs for employers.
NDEAM, with its origins dating back to 1945, serves as a reminder of the progress we have made in the realm of disability employment awareness. It is a testament to our commitment to creating a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can find purposeful work.
