Susie Davis’s journey from a small town overshadowed by segregation to a thriving career at FEMA is nothing short of remarkable. Growing up in Deport, Texas, Susie faced the challenges of a community fractured by racism, where opportunities for intellectual growth were scarce. Despite the odds, she pursued her dreams, eventually relocating to Denton, where she found love, started a family, and embarked on her educational journey.
In 1983, Susie took a pivotal step by enrolling in the Business Skills Training Center, setting the stage for her future success. Her dedication led her to the International Business College of Denton, where she honed her skills and laid the foundation for a fulfilling career.
Throughout her three-decade tenure at FEMA, Susie’s dedication was evident. Despite numerous opportunities to advance into leadership roles, she hesitated, recognizing the gap in her computer skills necessary for higher positions. It wasn’t until she discovered Goodwill’s Digital Career Accelerator program that she found the solution she needed.
Upon learning about the program through a friend, Susie wasted no time in seizing the opportunity. Attending classes at the American Legion Senior Center, she immersed herself in learning essential computer skills and Microsoft Office applications. The timing couldn’t have been better, as Susie found herself stepping up to support her church’s Usher Board, leveraging her newfound expertise to streamline operations.
In just three months, Susie’s transformation has been remarkable. From mastering mass communication tools to navigating Microsoft Office with confidence, she has unlocked a world of possibilities—all at no cost, thanks to Goodwill’s program.
Today, Susie not only benefits from her newfound skills but also pays it forward by sharing information about the Digital Career Accelerator with others. Her journey stands as a testament to the power of opportunity and perseverance, inspiring others to embrace lifelong learning and reach for their dreams.
